Pokemon Is Essential

Pokemon is the basis of any good childhood.  If you didn’t play the Pokemon games as a child, then you were the victim of child abuse… because that’s just not right.  I might have been born just after the original three games came out, but that didn’t stop me from playing my siblings’ old ones when they were done with them.

pokemon essential

When I use words to describe myself, especially in online bios, I always refer to myself as a Pokemon Trainer.  Simply because I spend a good chunk of my free time playing the Pokemon games, still.  I alternate between going back to the old school games and the new ones.  It’s been fun to keep up with all the new creatures the franchise has come up with, but even more so to explore the new regions and game features.

But why is Pokemon essential, you ask?

Well, to be honest, you can learn some good life skills from it.  Thomas Frank of College Info Geek even wrote a post based on this 4 years ago – 5 Essential Life Skills You Learned From Playing Pokemon.

I won’t go into all of them here though.  You can do that by checking out his post through the link.

I hadn’t actually realized that we learn life skills from Pokemon until I read this article.  The one that jumps out at me the most is the first one Thomas talks about – persistence.  You honestly cannot make it through a Pokemon game without it, otherwise you’d just get frustrated and throw the game out the window.

And we don’t want that.

I’m pretty patient when it comes to working towards something I really want.  Whether it’s saving money or building up skills to do the task, I’m okay with taking my time to work hard to achieve my goal.  Even in Pokemon still – I need to train them to a sufficient level before taking on a new gym leader or catching one of the rare Pokemon.

So to all the haters who say Pokemon is just a silly game, think again.  You can learn from just about any game you play, even if you don’t realize it.  Games are never a waste of time.

Especially Pokemon.

My 2015 Goals: the Results

Dang, it’s 2016 and it’s been a while since I’ve written.  I guess I got caught up in my everyday life that I completely ignored my blog.  I’m sorry blog… and the readers.  But it’s a new year and and I’m determined to be on here more (or at least once a week).

2015 goal results

Back June I gave a progress report on how my goals were going.  I was doing okay from what I remember and I can tell you right now I didn’t quite complete my list, but I guess that happens.  So here are my results for last year’s goals.

Sly’s 2015 Goals – the Results:

– Post at least once a week on my blog… failed.

I can’t say it’s a total fail.  I did good up until the end of the year, when life got a little crazy for me.  This might be another goal for this year, but we’ll see.

– Travel to a new country… failed.

I was unable to make it out of the United States this year, which kind of stunk. But I’m already looking at places to go to this year so I think this one will make it on this year’s goals list.

– Learn 24 new recipes… Completed December 2015.

In my time off the internet, I spent a lot of it cooking and learning new recipes.  I’m happy to say I can make 24 new dishes, even if some are simple ones.  Of course, not all were perfect, but I still learned to make them… so it counts.

– Try something new… Completed November 2015.

I actually tried doing a 10-day green smoothie cleanse in early November and I did feel really great after it.  I was a little moody the first few days though.

– Get a part-time job after my 16th birthday… completed April 8th, 2015.

I actually got a part-time job/internship before my birthday, so that was a huge accomplishment for me this year!

– Get my girlfriend a super amazing present for our 1 year anniversary in March… completed March 1st, 2015.

Yes, I did spoil my lady this year for our first anniversary…. and you can read all about that adventure here.

– Increase my running stamina to 3 miles… Completed July 2015.

I completed my goal of running three miles with no trouble this summer.  It was a great accomplishment for me.

– Get my driving permit in May and my license by December 31st… failed.

I’ve got my permit, so that’s half of it.  But unfortunately I was not able to get in to take my driver’s license test before the end of the year.  I am happy to say that I do have an appointment this month to take the test and hopefully pass.

So I didn’t do too bad.  I actually completed more than I thought.  I’m currently working on my goals for this year, so you can expect that post to be up in a few days.

Happy New Year everyone!

My 2015 Goals: 6 Month Update

It’s hard to believe that we’re already into June of 2015, but it’s here… staring us in the face whenever we look at our calendars.

2015 goals update

Back in January, I was inspired by Tabby to make my own Goals of 2015 list to complete this year.  Yes, it’s pretty much a ‘new year resolution’ list, but I like the idea of having goals and a deadline to complete them (within reason, of course).

So, as you can see I have a separate page here on my blog for my goals, but let’s take a look and see how I’m progressing with them so far…

Sly’s 2015 Goals (Update 6/14/15):

– Post at least once a week on my blog… in progress.

Since this is an ongoing goal, I can’t say it’s completed.  And there are always circumstances that come along where I am not able to post, but I don’t think I’ve been doing too bad so far.

– Travel to a new country… not complete.

I still have yet to leave the USA as of 2015.  I just have not been able to in the last six months, but now that it’s summer, I should be able to get on that.

– Learn 24 new recipes… in progress.

Twenty-four recipes is a lot, for me anyway.  So far I’m up to eleven and all can be found on my Goals page, complete with links to the recipes.

– Try something new… not complete.

I have yet to try something that I really consider new.  No, the new recipes do not count.

– Increase my running stamina to 3 miles… in progress.

To be completely accurate, I’m currently at 2.25 miles without wearing myself out.  I don’t have too much more to go!

– Get my driving permit in May and my license by December 31st… in progress.

I’m currently halfway there.  I got my permit on my birthday, so after some lessons and practicing for about 5-6 months I’ll be able to take my test before the last day of the year.

So it looks like I’m doing pretty well, even if only two of the tasks are fully complete.  I think I will actually be able to complete my list by the end of the year.  Of course, this is assuming I don’t fail my driving test at the end of the year.  We’ll see how that works out.
